Pain in my foot has been escalating a little bit. Nothing acute, but just an

ache. If it's propped up on a pillow on the couch there's almost no

discomfort. But the moment I put it near the floor, gravity on the boot and

the general pain sets in.

It also occurs to me that I haven't even really mentioned what happened, given

that I haven't been journaling a lot lately. On December 28, I went out for a

really short run. I was excited about the prospect of trying out the Y

exercises with Emma and the Simmons the next day and so was waffling over

whether to get a run in. The weather was also not great; there was a light wet

snow and the streets were a litlte wet. All that said, I checked with Emma and

she thought it was okay as long as I was careful.

Just as I was passing the chapel on the Shore Road, there were a few cars

passing me. Given the weather, I tried to give them a wide berth by moving

over to the parking lot area in front of the chapel. But it turns out there

was ice under the snow in the parking area and I wiped out. First my left foot

went out from under me, and trying to catch myself, my right foot went out as

well. On the way down I tried to catch myself with my ankle. Looking down as I

fell, my right ankle was turned past 90 degrees to my right leg and everything

just felt wrong. I hit the nice and cursed a lot and tried to collect myself

enough to call Emma. My first call to her cellphone rang through, so I had to

make a second call to the house phone. She ran me over to Blue Hill where the

ED doc gave me a boot and told me it was a high sprain and a broken tibia. I

would probably need pins put in to make sure the bone set right, but needed to

see an ortho surgeon to check on that.

On Friday, I was finally able to see a doctor up in Bangor who looked at the

x-ray and said that if the broken end of the tibia didn't move too much

between now and two weeks, when the bone will actually start repairing itself,

I may not need surgery to put pins in. But if it has moved at all between now

and then, I would still need surgery, and quickly.

So that's where I'm at. Sitting on the couch, recovering from Breaking My Ankle

Woah. It's already almost 11 and I haven't been up for more than 45 minutes.

Not sure what happened last night, but I slept in mightily. Emma was supposed

to be going to the Y for a workout while the Bubba grabbed the kids. But

winter weather showed up in the form of cold rain and ice, so everyone is

still home.

I think having Emma up and about this morning led me to roll over and fall

asleep again. I thought she'd be gone and the house would be quiet. But

instead we're all here :)
