Reviewed email, Jira and Slack. Noted an email from Shawn Blodgett about the
state of planning for the Castine Bicentennial Planning Committee work and the
fact that the Oliver Hazard Perry needs both Rhode Island and Maine to relax
restrictions in time for the celebration. Between that and the fact that with
Portland canceling they’d need something like $60k to make the trip means
we’re probably looking at deferring the celebration.
In Slack, Maciej Myslinski noted that he’s broken the task of removing the
15Five Project: Group Types feature flag into a bunch of smaller tickets
reflecting on how difficult it was to do that in one pull request.

Reading about I Could Do That in a Weekend, an interesting article with a take
on why companies have large engineering teams. Central argument is with people
who say they could do what Google does.

It’s a beautiful day outside today. A little chilly in the shade, but a light
breeze with the heat of the sun that feels really nice. I got an early 8 mile
run in today thanks to Emma being flexible about when I run.
Thinking on my run about why I do things like use FreeBSD or Ultra Running. It
occurred to me that in a lot of cases, I search for intentionally small
communities. I live in a small town, in a small state. I think what draws me
to something like FreeBSD is the relatively small community compared to Linux.
The same is true of running. Distance running is popular everywhere, but when
you combine the small community of Maine with the small community of distance
running, I know a lot of people pretty well through running, and it gives me
the opportunity to be helpful to my community as well.
The larger a community gets, the hard it is for me to find my place in it.
Large cities don’t need you, at least not at first blush. Sure eventually
maybe you can serve on your neighborhood council or something like that, but
there’s always someone else above you. Same with Linux. The opportunity to
help people with Linux issues is vanishingly small because so many people use
it as a desktop these days.
