Journal

Today began rough when Emma Sweet discovered that I had just been throwing compost in the trash at night. It wasn't a lot of compost, and I couldn't explain my logic to her well so it ended up looming over us most of the morning.

I did what I usually do when I'm feeling guilty but justified and just dug into all the things that needed to happen around the house. I put up the laundry, filled the scalder for chicken slaughter, fed all the chickens in the tractors and the coop, and got the kids breakfast. That made me feel a little holier than thou and gave me some room to negotiate for still going on a long run this afternoon. None of it made me a better person, however.

We ended up getting 8 meat birds processed. The goal in my head was all 16 we have left, but the reality of our fridge space and our ability to actually joint and freeze them, made 8 a much more reasonable number. There's something to be said for not killing yourself to getting something done (he said after running 20 miles).

I also, to stay out of the dog house, helped make dinner. Emma had taken a nap and woke up uninspired to make the lamb and eggplant stew we had talked about. She even said we probably didn't have time, at 14:15 :)

So I started chopping up onions and celery and prepped the meat to go in. I managed to get most of the dish made before I left for my run, and a loaf of bread in the oven. Not too bad. While I was gone Emma had to add some blanched almonds and apricots and let it simmer for another hour or two. That freed her up to make a fucking amazing quadruple berry pie from a Minnesota recipe for dessert. Oh man it was good. The kids loved it too.

Speaking of the kids, before dinner Silas Sewell, Jane Sewell and Asa Sewell were super excited to show me a bug that Si had found in the bunny garden. On the backside of the peas was a stick bug, but it was like no stick bug I've ever seen. Instead of long, delicate legs, it had chunky legs that were short and, when wrapped tight around the pea stem, kept the bug almost hugging the stem. He as pretty excited about the find.

Reflecting on this run a bit today and I think I'm suffering a little from breaking my running up into shorter segments. It's benefiting my time management and my knee, but when I do long runs I'm just on my feet for a much more significant amount of time than my weekly load. It's helping to get one longer run in on Fridays, but I long term I'll be curious to see the effects of this traning method.

One thing I will note is that I have given myself soooo much time to train right now that I can slowly add miles to my longer runs and build up endurance. Hell, usually I'd only get ONE 20+ mile training run in for a marathon plan. So the very fact that I'm still 8 weeks out from my race and I've hit 20 is a good sign. Just need to keep beating myself up on these longer runs and keep my head high while I do it.

On my LSD last week I was feeling really good at about the 11-12 mile mark. So good that I was sure I was making progress building up my long legs, despite splitting up my runs into medium runs for the last few weeks.

Today, I didn't feel that same conditioning at the midway point, but my mind was also stuck counting miles and pace and dumb things like that. I never really got in a groove to run. So today ended up being more of a slog than it should have been.

None of that was improved when, at mile 18, right after finishing the second turnaround on Wilson Point Road, my gut when nuclear on me. This has been happening on runs beyond 16 miles for weeks now. Part of me wonders if it's the FlipBelt I got to hold water that's putting funny pressure on my gut. The other part of me is pretty sure the whole family had some sort of stomach bug the last month or so, and maybe I'm still in the fall out of that.

In any case, I hope next weekend's 20 miler goes better than this one. It turns out the Gilpin Road is just about exactly the turn around for a 10 out-and-back from here. I didn't quit make it that far today because I wasn't sure how I'd feel on the return trip. So I tacked on 1 on the New Road coming back and got to just past Jessica Rollerson's old house in Orland before turning around.
