Overview

I once imagined managing people in the form of a Engineering Manager was the

primary or perhaps only path towards career progression in my life.

After a conversation at the 2020 15Five Team Retreat led by Paul Logston who has

been fashioned a Principal himself, I began to realize that there’s important

work for senior engineers besides people.

There’s a lot of concern in tech about how you project your engineering culture.

A positive or negative vision of your engineering team from the outside can have

a huge impact on the quality of applicants when it’s time to hire more engineers.

It can also make or break the internal environment for fellow engineers. Few

intelligent people will long tolerate leadership that doesn’t keep them

interested in what they’re building.
