Journal
I need to do a better job with these journal entries. I spend all day thinking
about things, and then I sit down here and write about writing in my journal.
Sigh.
Church was interesting today. Margaret was speaking on the need to get involved
in our democracy and how the most likely threats to Western-style democracy
would likely be from within. The irony, of course, is that she channeled a
speach from a young Abraham Lincoln. I don't know why Lincoln always gets
trotted out for these things. I find arguments that our democracy crumbling to
be sad given how long this has been the case. De Toqueville may have been
enamoured of the American experiment, but what we have now is a shell of what
France and the US expected. A strong central government has led to public
servants who don't understand their obligation. Snowden exposed how little most
people care or know about privacy, and the rest will be written when someone
finally has had enough.
Obama used targeted, extra-congressional drone strikes all over the place in the
name of national security. Of course, the Spanish American war was for national
security too. Nevermind that it was pure aggression on our part. I think
maintaining small communities with as much independence from things we don't
control as possible.
