I need to do a better job of eliminating choices throught the day. Read [[id:620ad82b-0a5c-4a44-943d-d7e8bd061f52][How to

Take Smart Notes]] I got to the section on willpower, where the note taking

strategy is demonstrated as one way to avoid short-term memory failure and

also improve access to willpower by avoiding using it when you don't have to.

I start my day and have to figure out what I'm going to wear. The room is a

bit of a mess, so sometimes it's a matter of figuring out if something is

clean. I usually come downstairs and finish any dishes I didn't do the night

before, make coffee and then ... figure out what I'm going to do. Often I'll

hang out upstairs for a bit, but sometimes I end up going straight to work

because I got up late.

This probably has a huge impact on How I Start My Day, and ultimately the

course my day runs.

I wonder if I can track how my day starts and then evaluate the subjective

quality of my day?

Got the hops I ordered planted in pots. That was one suggested way of getting them started, rather than just putting them in the ground. I'm still not sure where they're going to go, so I'd rather go the easy route for now.

I ordered Zeus Hops, Cashmere Hops, Centennial Hops, and Fuggle Hops which I'm pretty excited about. I successfully made a Homebrew Ale using barley I malted myself. It's not the most delicious, but it's not bad and I think I have an idea how to improve it. Once I have a straight malt ale I can start with home-grown hops too!

As engineers, how do we organize around projects that don't tie neatly to customer needs? João would love to experiment with GraphQL rather than a REST API. I'd love to add fine-grained access to the API so individual users can build tools that use 15Five. How do we fit those things in?

I setup a personal OKR to do a better job taking notes. The idea is to read How to Take Smart Notes, develop a system for note taking that's flexible enough to stick with and to also extract at least three ideas from my notes for personal blog posts.

The idea here is to use Sonke Ahrens's Smart Note Taking and apply it to my engineering work. Often I have meetings or little things that I get caught up in and I lose the context of it later. I'd love if I had a system of organizing notes that would naturally surface things that are unaddressed.

Feeling a little disconnected from work at the moment. Andrii's mood yesterday

on our 1-on-1 is still sitting strange with me, and I am not sure if I'm in

the doghouse about something. I think I need to get back to running, though,

because I'm low energy for no reason a lot of the time.

During our listening session for Engineering at 15Five we discussed

the concern of not having principal engineers who know the codebase really

well. Johnny Pribyl pointed out that even a guy from CodeClimate noticed that

we often wait for certain folks to merge PRs.
