I finally finished setting up a Web cameras on the chicks on the porch. My
co-workers had been asking about it, but I was dragging my feet, I think
because the cable wasn't quite long enough the whole thing was kind of junky
looking. But I sucked it up, found a slightly longer cable and now have OBS
running to Twitch with a live stream of the chickens :smile:

I keep turning over a desire to improve my Handwriting. I'm not sure why, but I wish I had better handwriting and I do it so rarely these days that it seems the only way to improve would be via an artificial goal.
That got me thinking about my 2021 Q2 Personal OKRs and I had a few ideas. Handwriting is one. Better note taking is another. I would also like to get better at Simplification or decomplection as Rich Hickey would say.

I managed to find the energy to get the hose setup so we can fill a big bin of water for the goats. Jess had said a few days ago that Joel Salatin made some comment in a book about not carrying water and always finding a source close to the animals. I got pretty defensive about it in my mind at the time, which I think translated to getting quiet. It felt like a judgement about how we do things.
The reality, of course, is that Not Carrying Water could almost be thought of as an overarching philosophy of work. Water is easily managed. The way it flows is readily understood, and the vessels you need to hold it are plentiful. Why, then, except lack of imagination, would you sign yourself up to carry water somewhere on a regular basis.
One could imagine a scenario where the equipment and tools required to make a solid watering system may be out of budget, or not available. But in my own life, it definitely falls under the "momentary laziness versus thoughtful laziness" leading to a hell of a lot more work.

The kids are back to playing Minecraft again. I set them up with a server on
Rhea in a FreeBSD Jails and it's been working really well. The last
time I did this Silas was too young to appreciate it and Jane lost interest.
Now both are old enough to be having a blast and building things that should
hopefully stick around.
Two things occurred to me about Minecraft today. Firstly, I am always a
little nervous that the kids will destroy things or otherwise mess up the
server. But the beauty of Minecraft is letting things evolve. I think
that thought is a micro version of the urge to control kids which we have to
curb at all costs. Kids needUnstructured Play to explore.
Second, Minecraft online is a shit show and there's always some crazy new
trick someone has to make it less of an exploration of creativity and more of
someone else's ideas. Maybe that's it. It's not a shit show per-se, but the
nature of the Commons means you have to be careful about your interactions and
what ideas you're exposed to.

Emma and Jess were off picking up a truck for Jess today, so I was on the
kids. I'm not sure I did a great job overall, but the house isn't falling
apart. Silas and Jane got math and foreign language done and they tiddied up
their room and living room. Once all that was done and my meetings were over,
I let them play Minecraft for a while. They really do love playing, and it's a
pretty creative endeavour, way more creative than watching TV.
Beyond that, I had a bunch of meetings cut up my day again. That included a
meeting late in the day about Partnerships where Kapil communicated that the
App Marketplace is on hold while we ramp up support for more HRIS systems. I
can see the logic behid that, but I waas a little thrown by the sudden shift
until I spoke with Laura afterward about how our R&D prirorities are largely
unchanged by this. We're still doing the first part of the App Library and
then working on integrating the Emplify codebase. I think the most useful
thing I can do is reduce the scope of what I'm working on each week to a few
key goals and then do my best to achieve them. Right now I feel a little all
over the place.

Our brains are not good at objective thinking. We know this. Danny Kanhneman knows this and the theme is repeated throughout Thinking Fast and Slow. Sonke Ahrens points out that slip-box note taking augments that weak spot in our brains and helps us focus on finding connections and thinking subjectively, which our brains are extraordinarily good at. Sonke Ahrens points out that insight is born from the constant flow of different ideas in our heads. More often than not, the idea we start a project with is quite different from the idea we end with, this is insight in action and your note taking has to allow for that flow. How to Take Smart Notes

The idea of different sorts of notes is helpful. Sonke Ahrens makes a
compelling case that when you're actively reading or learning something, your
notes should be scribbled wherever you can so long as they can be collected.
Most important, however, is that the notes are summary or your own words.

I am taking an honest run at reading How to Take Smart Notes today. One of the
most interesting ideas is that Luhemann did all of this with pen and paper. It
makes accomplishing smart notes ourselves seem all too easy with tools like
