Andrii was pretty low energy on our Weekly Review call this morning. I think between being in Poltava with family and having a lot of meetings around a new PM on our squad he's just wiped. He did what he could to keep things positive, but he was clearly ready to start his weekend :smile:
In the meantime, I also had a call with Cris this morning after an absence of almost two months! Like any good relationship, it's almost as though we hadn't missed a beat. He's going through his own rough spot right now with his partner, but he said work is going well and he's happy to be on the other side of the Presidential Inauguration. I actually hadn't reflected much on how that whole period of time between the election the inauguration made me feel. The impact was actually pretty huge. More than anything, there was the easy distraction from tasks that the news hawking provided. Rather than dig into a tough issue, I could always check the news and there'd be some crazy new story. I still do that a little bit with Hacker News even in boring times, but the impact of Trump and the news cycle on my life the last few months was actually huge.
Cris and I also talked a bit about the current organizational issues at 15Five. Nothing so dysfunctional, but just my observations around how we can execute faster. Cris pointed out [[https://jacobian.org/2021/jan/5/designing-engineering-organizations/][an article]] by Jacob Kaplan-Moss that companies export their org-chart. The gist of that being that what you emphasize via organization is what the customers will see. So if you don't put intentional focus on some aspect of clean code, or bug bashing, customers will see that, and that focus starts with how you're organized. If it's no one's job to address the login flow, or it's two squads responsibility, that decision will be evident in the crappiness (through lack of attention) of the login flow.
