Update, not being happy with the sharp changes in brightness, I knocked up a

fun `fade` script in my bin directory that slowly fades the brightness up and

down. Open source for the win!

Spent a silly amount of time trying to get the backlight on my X220 laptop

working again. It was stuck at a low light level and I was concerned that they

may cut the power later on due to the car accident I saw earlier.

So I chugged along looking for how I'd set it before and it turned out I was

using a tee call to put a value in the brightess sys fs:

That works, but kind of sucks as you have to do some gymnastics to increment

or decrement the brightness level. So in the end I did an apt search and found

I had already installed `brightnessctl` which allows you to add + or - values.

The last remaining hurdle was that I was for some reason not in the `video`

group so I had to sudo to run the command. That wont work via i3, so I ended

up changing the sys file to be owned by sudo. Of course, I also added myself

to video because there's probably other good reasons I should have access to

video tools.

Just watched someone hit the oak tree near the access road this afternoon. Molly and Lola and I were finishing up a nice long walk down on the beach and instead of coming up the Brownell's property, I struck out through the woods beneath our access road. As I cam up the access road I was probably a little lower down than the cemetary when Jaime, a resident in town, had his right wheels leave the road and in the slush on the shoulder just totally lost control of the car.

I was probably twenty feet away when he hit the tree at 30 or 40 mph. The sounds was weird, like a muffled crunch. Parts of the car flew in front of me about five or ten feet away.

I called 911 quickly and reported the accident. Then I checked and Jaime seemed a little shook up, but not injured in any obvious way. I got the dogs leashes on a pole by the last little tree on the access road and ran to check on him. He obliterated a utility pole for guy wires and it was across the road, so I also helped flag down motorists and warn them that they couldn't get past.

The whole thing was surreal, and I'm pretty lucky there was a large oak tree on the corner. If not for that tree the car very easily could have slid closer to where the dogs and I were.
