Journal
A crazy day of getting packed and driving up to Fredericton to start a weekend
trip. We're having dinner at King's Landing tomorrow night, but first enjoyed
dinner at the Schnitzel Palour. Uwe was fantastic and hospitable with the kids
as always. I ate way too much, and we probably spent way too much. But I enjoy
supporting them and this was a special occasion. We're also just about done with
weekend spending except for breakfast the next two days.
During the ride up I was in our engineering bi-weekly meeting. During the call
we talked a bit about whether sprints are working for us. Krystian, as he tends
to do, pointed out that we need to prove we can do certain things before we
start tweaking teams. Thus, allowing some groups to move to a kanban model
driven by deliverable instead of sprints might be good, but we wont know if
it's an improvement if we don't master sprints first.
I was also reflecting a bit on how admin squad has worked. This is easily the
best work environment I've ever been a part of. I think one of the huge benefits
is Andrii's tendency towards higher estimates and less work committed to.
There's a fine line to walk there, though. At some point you have to start
getting aggressive and pushing yourself a little. Going 105% of sprint
completion week over week probably means we're undercommitting. But the reality
is that if something goes sideways, you can still plan on us hitting our goals.
If everything goes perfect, then we go above. You hope most of the time for
things to be perfect, but they almost always will regress to the average
eventually. So your average should still allow product to count on you to deliver.
