- [X] Town

The town of Castine was a trading outpost for the Plimouth Colony in the late 1600s. The site of many battles, it's most famous for being the site of the largest naval defeat in American history until Pearl Harbor. This is a photo of Commodore Dudley Saltonstall. He was court martialed and found guilty of treason after losing all 32 ships in the assault on Castine during British occupation. Lots has change in town in the last 200 years.

- [X] The Library

Built in 1902 thanks to George Witherle, our town sports a tremendous library. A nice place to read a book, even during a pandemic. Here I've brought my own book. I believe they have their own books, but I've yet to go inside.

- [X] School

The Adams School was originally a two room school house. It's not hard to find people in town with stories from when it still was only two rooms. Now it houses some of the most advanced technology in town as well as educating younger children.

- [X] Church

The Unitarian Church was built in 1780 and houses a Revere Bell. I don't think Paul Revere actually made the bells himself, but no doubt someone in his family did. It was a big deal when they installed it here in Castine. My wife and I attend this church at least once a month.

- [X] Cemetery

The cemetery is where the town buries it's dead. I've never seen them, but my wife says there's a family plot where I'm welcome to be buried. Some people have been here for over three hundred years.

- [X] Fort George

Built by the British during the American Revolution, the earthenworks of Fort George provided a formidable defense of the strategic Castine peninsula. There's supposed to be wooden palisades on top of the walls, but we don't have the money to rebuild them.

- [X] Backshore Beach

Backshore Beach provides wonderful views of the land on the other side of Penobscot Bay. I don't care for sand myself, but I sometimes humor the children by bringing them here, or throw a frisbee around.

- [X] Maine Maritime Academy

The sole institution for post-secondary education in town, Maine Maritime. The students are supposedly very punctual, although I've never seen any evidence of it.

- [X] Witherle Woods Preserve

A small forest in town with nearly 3 miles of trails. It's difficult to get lost thanks to wonderful signage. But occasionally it's possible to lose your way.

- [X] Dyce Head Lighthouse

This is our lighthouse, which I thought up in a dream, actually. But it had already been built, so we just put a new light in it.

- [ ] Town Dock

The town dock is where you can get a hot dog, diesel fuel, a winch to pull lobster pots out of your fishing boat. Or where we tie up our boats.

Is that big ship yours?

No. I don't own any boats.

- [X] Off neck

Castine is separated from the mainland by a small isthmus. We call the end of the peninsula "on-neck." Our farm is actually not "on-neck" We live "off-neck."

- [X] Beaches

There are number of nice beaches off neck. This one is small and again, I don't really care for sand so aside from looking for run away pigs, we don't go down there very often.

- [ ] Farm animals

On our farm we have chickens, ducks, turkeys and goats. The goats names are Cinnamon, Moonsilver and Tricksy. When they're not chasing and scaring the animals, our four kids seem to get along pretty well with everyone.

In our garden we grow flowers, corn, squash, and all manner of other crops. I'm not sure I'd want to live anywhere else.
