I rose a question about using timestamped fields as datetimes not booleans and
both Andrii and Andrés called me out for not treating them as booleans. The
logic Andrii gave me was that the fields do double duty as datetimes, serving as
both when something happened and the state of the instance.
That makes logical sense (the two questions answered with one field) but (and I
bet you can guess where my "but" is going laughing) treating a datetime field as
a boolean means there's room for an assertion (is user deactivated) to turn up
true when as represented by data it should be false. Perhaps that should never
happen, but it doesn't mean it wont, or that some future version of ourselves
decides that a we should add pending dectivations and then we have to save
ourselves from our current version of ourselves by refactoring all the __isnull
calls on deactivated_ts.
I think this is actually an anti-pattern, and I would prefer to see instance
state maintained in a state field. A user cannot be both deactivated and deleted,
so

Journal
Overcast this morning and it appears likely it will rain or snow at some point.
I started out my day today with a CFD meeting to review the RFP for a new tanker
truck. That meeting went fine, but Randy let us know that John Gardiner passed
away yesterday. He's gonna leave a hole in this community. He had just turned
90, so it's hard to say he didn't have a long happy life. But he'll still be
missed.
I got a ton of great work done on Wednesday, but yesterday was a bit of a wash.
Turns out like to just build things, tweaking what's already been written or
managing the steps to get things PR reviewed and deployed are not my favorite.
---
Work today was a little scattershot, but less so than yesterday. I got two PRs
cleaned up and am hoping to a little more work on the new attributes module this
evening, but the night is already getting late, so I'm not sure.
Kember has her big birthday sleepover tomorrow night. I'm not totally sure what
it will look like, but it did occur to me that I have a Saturday free from
obligations for the first time in a while. I'm sure there will be birthday
things to prepare for, but I'd also love to get outside cutting trees down or
some such. I should make a list.
I also started a new method for learning to draw via a website called
SkillShare. I'm not sure if this will stick, but it's a video course and the
first two lessons were super helpful. It just had be learning to hold the pencil
lightly and to make circles and ovals with a whole-arm movement that I've never
used to draw before.
