Had a great conversation with Andrii about the difficulties of knowing when you're done improving performance of something. Performance Improvement in engineering is difficult because it's never clear exactly how far you can go. You can spend a lot of time fixing something and not improve the performance at all. The best trick is to open PRs early and often so other engineers can weigh in on the work you've done.
I also brought up the idea of improving importing new user data across the board by using what we already have in cache. Using CompanyStructure to Diff Bulk Imports is an idea I had while gardening on Saturday. I was listening to a podcast with a co-creator of Subversion where he talked about how all modern CVS systems diff files by creating hashes of all files and then only update what needs to be updated. What if we could diff the CompanyStructure we have with a "fake" CompanyStructure built around the incoming data? At that point you'd know exactly what needs to be updated in the system. Lastly, you could even create a hash of the JSON representation of a user (group memberships, reviewer tree, etc) and when you import you'd generate a hash of a JSON rep and you'd know if any users have changed without hitting the database at all. This may make less sense that the first optimization.
