Today was a pretty good, with the exception that Jessica Rollerson was having a terrible day. I thought things changed a lot when she got sort of ganged up on at dinner last night between my stubborn refusal to believe contractors about painting our house and insisting that pine clapboards didn't need to be painted or stained. Then we were talking about the extreme cold in the Southern Plains and Jess got to talking about how she was afraid of the donkey freezing to death. She didn't say it so directly, but that was what she was suggesting. Gabe kinda blew her off, and Emma and I both piled on noting that animals can survive a lot that would cause suffering in humans. She seemed really low after that, kind of defeated.
Then today she took the day off work and seems to have slept most of the day. I have a really hard time understanding that sort of funk because I don't have any of the same mental or chemical issues she does. So that put a damper on Mardi Gras today. None of the fun was helped by the snow turning mostly to icy sleet and rain today. So we have a solid quarter inch of ice on everything, but no snow really to speak of. And not having folks over for Mardi Gras just compounded it. And yet, it was a good day. Emma made some fantastic Boudin sausage balls and I made shrimp and grits. The food is sitting a little heavy in my stomach, but not too bad.
Work went well today. I managed to get some decent coding done. This whole week has been productive from a code reviewed and completed perspective. It hasn't been nearly as good with process, but I think that's the give and take. I managed to totally forget that I have a one-on-one with Andrii tomorrow morning as well. We're supposed to be talking about where I see myself in 10 years and general career progression. I think, in general, I bump along by default without a lot of ambition towards specific goals. If I have any such goals, it's probably tinkering sorts of things that don't lead to specific ends. Perhaps what I really need to do is ...

I ended up getting to bed later last night than I had hoped. I got stuck reading Hyperion as the section I'm in just sort of keeps going. I did manage to reach the end of the journal of the Jesuit priest stuck in the Bairua community. I am really enjoying Dan Simmons writing, though it definitely has a style and it's reminiscent of H.P. Lovecraft where there's an unknown that keeps getting walked around until you brush up against it, but never get to hear about it directly. The Shrike is similar to a lot of Lovecraftian creatures too.
Aside from getting up late, I feel *much* better than I did yesterday. I'm not as cold, and have much more energy. I think I'll chalk that one up to doing some Strength Exercises yesterday even without running or skiing. I should probably do that more regularly when I can't run. I'm not really sure why I dropped the habit.
