Journal

Another gray fall day and all the kids are home from school. I was able to sleep

in, though, thanks to Emma taking Nabby when she woke up early.

All things considered, I've actually had a nice morning. I'm finally getting my

productive pieces in place with Emacs and org mode. Mostly I've cleaned up how I

publish blog posts so that it's easier to keep things up to date. And I actually

had a lot of good partially written content. Now the challenge is to keep it up.

---

As of Sunday, Nabby has officially stopped nursing. Emma's never been a huge fan

of nursing, so I wouldn't have thought it would affect her as it has. But she's

lamenting the loss already. This is likely her last time doing this. That's got

to be hard. On Monday, Nabby, instead of nursing, just bit Emma. Emma spoke

sharply to her, which is something Nabby does not respond well to. Since then

Nabby has shown zero interest in nursing. She's an opinionated baby.

---

After dinner tonight, Dirk and I had a fun discussion about politics. The entree

to the discussion was talking about the problem of ever increasing home values

and using one's houses as a means to investment. Dirk didn't wholeheartedly agree

with me, but it got us talking about some of the more fundamental issues with

our democracy. Namely, lack of a viable third-party voting mechanism

(ranked-choice voting), and rampant gerrymandering. Not these would solve our

ills, but it would at least bring us closer to a representation of the will of

the governed. If you don't have that you might as well have an oligarchy, which

we kind of already have.

The other big topic was the problem with American or Western Exceptionalism. The

problem right now is that we've hitched our exceptionalism very tightly to the

idea of democracy. But China is demonstrating that you absolutely do not need

democracy to generate wealth and create a stable political system. So in the

face of Chinese corruption and lack of individual freedom, how do you account

for their prosperity? We're left saying, "yeah, well, i can insult our

president." And that's about it.
