This morning, Emma and I were working in the kitchen to get a decidedly different Thanksgiving dinner off the ground. I had just gotten inside from harvesting the last of our brussel sprouts to toss with squash from the root cellar and was working with 2-year-old Nabby to snap off each sprout and got to thinking about holidays past.
One aspect of my life in New England that always seems a little ironic is that Emma, my New England wife, did not grow up with big Thanksgivings. She has a small extended family, and Thanksgiving was just another meal with a few extra side dishes. Contrasted with the Thanksgivings from my childhood, where family descend from the East and West of use for a cozy long weekend of beating the daylights out of our uncle, taking care of sick dogs, learning about the coolest Midwest emo bands out of Michigan, or jumping out of the top bunk into a pile of blankets a pillows for as long as it took the adults to find out what we were up to, and the holidays were different for me.
Thinking about all of that just made me extra thankful today. This is not the holiday I think anyone would have wished for. 2020 has been a strange year on so many levels. But the quiet holidays do give me a chance to reflect on the joys I've been lucky enough to share with all of you. I'm just feeling really thankful today for having had those moments together as one big family.
