Journal
Besides the long run, not a lot doing today. The kids spent a lot of time
playing up in their room, and Emma did a lot of reading to them around nap time
from Ranger’s Apprentice.
Two nights ago, Nabby started sleeping in her own bed. The kids re-arranged
where they sleep so Silas is on the top bunk, Asa is on the bottom bunk and
Jane is sleeping on the day bed. The whole thing is adorable.
Nabby is still figuring it out though. Tonight she toddled downstairs to find
some k’nex and something else I couldn’t quite figure out and then toddled back
upstairs. A few minutes later she came back down and was sad on the stairs. I
took her back up to bed and tucked her in and she seems to be staying now. Whew!

These doughnuts did not come out as well as usual. I ended up rushing their
development and proofing so they were a little denser than I would have liked.
Still delicious, and the kids didn’t complain. But I think next time I should
stick to making the dough at night and letting that first rise happen overnight.

Jess was doing her usual passive aggressive, “You’re not doing what you said
you’d do” about the tractor today. She asked if she should be doing something
else to get the chickens outside if the tractor wasn’t fixed. So I ended up
having to go out during sunburn time and use a chainsaw to rough cut some 2x4
and fix the damn thing.
I think she expected a much more robust overhaul of the tractor. I was just
trying to make it so it wasn’t falling apart. It probably wont last past this
season, but it’s been around for almost 8 years now, so I’d say that’s a
pretty good run.

I was on the fence initially about doing a longer run, something around 18
miles just to see how I’d do. But I was exhausted when I got around my usual
15 mile circuit on the New Road and the Dunbar Road. So when I ran past the
house I endeavored to finish with the “easy” mile of the flat just past the
Brownell’s property. That made for a nice finish.
Otherwise the run was pretty uneventful. I managed to keep my HR in check for
all but the biggest up hills, so my average came in around 142 bpm which put
me on target for a VO2max of 60, the first time I’ve been there in a number of years.
