Journal
I've fallen off of planning my day this weekend. Not sure what exactly happened.
On Friday I ended up getting stuck trying to get Mailman3 to install. Everything
worked alright except that I couldn't get mail sent to the list to relay out. I
think this got me off kilter a little with regards to my usual scheduling.
I also didn't get much outdoor work done this weekend. I did finally get the
turkey in the fridge taken care of. The breasts were smoked, and they turned out
delicious. The legs and thighs we boiled and picked. Emma has used it to make
some nice dishes for the kids lunch yesterday and then church potluck today.
Ariel's sermon in church today was great. She was talking about the sanctity of
food and the need to consider wisely what we put in our bodies and how it gets
to us.
In a lot of respects her ideas seem to be in line with how Emma and I were
thinking when we first moved to Maine. I've gotten less focused on those, but
Emma does not seem to have. She was really taken with the sermon today. For my
part, I still hold food in high regard, but as with a lot of things, I'm more
moderate in my approach.
To that point, I was thinking about topics like climate change while I was
driving Kember home tonight. The reality is, our concern for climate change is
selfish. The Earth does not care. Life on Earth does not care. We care, because
we are finely tuned to live in a very small window of acceptable climate.
And yet, I think sea-level rise is something humanity can overcome. Maybe that's
just being optimistic, but there are a lot of things that could have been very
bad for us, and we've risen to the challenge. Why are so many folks assuming the
worst here?

I drove Jane up to Ellsworth before church today so she could do OWL class,
while we were at the annual meeting. I wasn't sure Jane would be okay with being
dropped off for the whole Ellsworth service and then OWL, but she was sport
about it. I can't believe how old she's getting. In the car, she seems to have
picked a bunch of chill tracks to play that she knows I like. Or maybe she just
liked them. In any case it was adorable. One of the tracks is /Mass Pike/ by the
Get Up Kids. I couldn't help but think that I was introduced to GUK by Lenny
when I was probably in sixth or seventh grade. I used to skateboard to those
albums in the garage. Jane's reaching that age. That's nuts.
