Christmas this year was about what you'd expect from 2020 at this point. Emma was suffering from a headache for much of Christmas Day, and we put Finnegan down on the Wednesday before. The kids are taking that pretty well so far, though just tonight Nabby got concerned about him being left outside. I had to tell her he wasn't here anymore, which she took with the alomb of a two-year old, but still.
Aside from those tihngs though, it was actully a pretty good year. We didn't get the kids anything obscene, and nor did their grandparents or cousins. There were a few toys, some stuffed animals and a lot of candy. In fact I ate myself stupid and will probably need to do penance for this for a while. Thanfully our desserts ended up pretty low key because Emma wasn't feeling well, but that didn't stop me from eating all manner of candy and other things that left me feeling not great.
I should also write this down before I forget it, but I managed to completly fuck up my home server right before Christmas. I successfully installed OpenWRT on an EA8500, which was great, but for some reason everything coming through the firewall was really really slow to resolve. I finally realized that the unbound DNS server I setup was hard-wired to a 192.168.8.1/24 network space, and so was effectively always timing out and falling over on the other DNS server. That introduced the delays. It was a tremendous relief when I figured that out.
The weather over the break has been crazy. A lot of wind has ripped through in a number of discrete weather patterns. On Christmas Day it was nearly 60 degrees and the wind was gusting up to 50 or 60 mph. Then we had a calm day yesterday but just tonight the wind has picked up again.
Today I got out and did some brush clearing and wood cutting in the back. Our wood insert is being installed on January 18 and I've been busy trying to collect what wood we have that's already dry and trying to be dilligent about planning for next year. Thankfully, we have a pretty good wood pile going already. I would like to get some more things other than oak on there, though because oak is going to take forever to dry.
Being back there has also gotten me excited about leaning into Forest School with the kids more. I'd love to spend some time tomorrow brainstorming lessons and projects to take with us outside. Things like axe handling, shelter building, shaving horse building (and using a draw knife). Tree identification and climbing. Fire building and safety, along with the importance of heat. I'm getting a little lost this evening now looking at axes. You could spend a fortune on nice axes for wood working or firewood.
