*JSONField on the User model*

- Pros

- lightweight and very flexible

- Very performant: https://coussej.github.io/2016/01/14/Replacing-EAV-with-JSONB-in-PostgreSQL/

- Cons

- inability to filter on date fields easily

- renaming attributes is painful

*Entity-Attribute-Value model using https://github.com/makimo/django-eav2/*

- Pros

- properly indexed, very fast

- fully filterable and searchable, esp. datetimes

- Cons

- convoluted table layout, with many n joins for each attribute

Thanks Colin!  So, I know I was very vocal about not wanting to handle registration and Chair next year but I think that was

coming more from a very last minute resignation from Jessica (Belfast) and no programming done.  I have had several folks

approach me about stepping up to coordinate various components of the Retreat.  I am willing to step into the leadership role

again for our 2020 retreat AND handle the administrative/registration/contract with Ferry Beach.  I am hoping we can talk

about the possibility of an online registration at the November CMT meeting and recruiting someone from Belfast to coordinate

workshops.  I look forward to seeing the evaluation.  BTW, I have absolutely LOVED watching your family grow and connecting

with you children.  You and Emma can call me to watch the munchkins if you want a date night! 565-2057

Journal

So I thought the big storm was going to be mostly yesterday and overnight, but

the strongest winds appear to be this morning. The bus was delayed and the kids

were mostly still sleeping when I woke up. Well, the girls. The boys were all

awake and clamoring for candy :)

I made coffee and headed downstairs, which is a first in a while. I usually

spend some time setting tasks upstairs and helping out with things. But dishes

were done yesterday and we didn't do dinner at home, so there was nothing to

clean up, and I had meetings to prepare for, including one regarding hiring

Helen Miller for fundraising ME 200 that I'm feeling a little out my league

with. Bobby and Bill have WAY more experience as execs and yet I'm the chair :(

I'm pleased with myself these days though, as I've gotten back to reading a bit

more. I'm plowing my way through Dracula and really enjoying it. The fourth

chapter was way creepier than those that came before it. I was afraid the book

was going to be "scary for when it was written". Instead it's just creepy.

I need to do a better job of embracing /amor fati/ more often. Just yesterday we

got stuck in Bucksport for an hour longer than we meant to because we stopped to

see Kember really quickly. Heather asked if the girls could go trick or treat up

by the high school really quick, so we said sure because we still needed to pick

up the pizza. When we got back with the pizza we waited for more than half an

hour for contact and finally met up with Heather and the girls 45 minutes later.

We ended up getting back to Castine really late and everything had shutdown at

town hall. It was really disappointing at the time, but the kids were positive

about the whole thing.

Accepting fate and managing expectations are surprisingly similar.

After reading [[http://yiming.dev/blog/2019/05/22/my-gtd-workflow-2019-ver/][about GTD from Yiming]] today I think I'm going to try experimenting

with adding deadlines to my someday tasks. Not necessarily as a mechanism for

getting things done, but to at least surface and re-prioritize things.

There's a lot of stuff that goes by the board for me. I get distracted. I have a

meeting and talk about something. I'd love to make Emacs and Org Mode more of a

second brain than just a dumping ground for my one brain. The best way to do

that is to re-surface things occasionally.

---

Emma was telling me when I went upstairs to do animal chores today how windy it

was this morning. The constant wind was strong, but gusts would send the trees

across the street almost horizontal. Truly an amazing day. The wind is supposed

to continue through this afternoon too.
