Journal

Woke up after three hours of sleep this morning to catch my flight to

California. I've been followed by a strange sense of malaise around this trip

for a few days and it started with the cancelled flight. Something just felt

less than fun about flying and leaving the family. Part of, I believe, is mixed

emotions about meeting a lot of the non-engineers at 15Five. I had a great time

in Portugal, but our goals were really focused. This time around I think I'm a

little nervous about the usefulness of building a tight rapport with folks not

in our discipline. Also, both Andrii and Zoltan are noting going to make it,

which is a disappointment.

That said, it was really nice to have more family time before leaving. I was

able to do a lot more cleaning and hanging out with the kids before I left last

night.

---

Today started off a little strange. I got an email with a receipt for payment

for the hotel room. But I was pretty sure I had already paid the room fee

before. So that added some stress to the start of the trip. It did, however,

dawn on me on the airport shuttle in Philadelphia, that my new challenge with

getting our finances under control will be not dwelling on the little backsteps

or mistakes, but to just tighten up everything else.

---

Sat down on the flight from Bangor with a guy who does SEO optimization but has

engineering background as well as farming. The conversation was really neat

talking about our shared experience with technology in the past and farms. The

conversation was a little superficial at times but ultimately a nice way to

spend the trip. When I made my connection in Philly just fine I was in a much

better mood too. Turns out the stress of connecting flights was at least part of

what I was feeling this morning.

The guy I'm sitting next to now is an ultrarunner and puts me to shame. Talking

with him makes me want to start distance running again. Maybe take the emphasis

off time and just go out for distances or time. The hardest part is finding room

for 1 or 2 hour runs each day. But I bet if I de-emphasized certain things like

watching sports I'd have more time to run in the morning. Perhaps what I need to

do when I get home is commit to going to bed much earlier so I can run in the

morning, even when it's dark and cold. It's never that cold, at least not consistently.
