1. Lectures - Castine history generally; shipbuilding and shipping (the author
of the book who spoke, plus someone to talk about pre-1820 maritime lore);
suffrage (Castine/Maine women in particular, e.g. astronaut);
Unitarian/Trinitarian split (history plus 200 years of TCPOC);
2. Organizations - CHS (open both days, I trust); Wilson Museum - maybe even a re-enactment; churches open with host
3. Tours - walking (a la CHS); riding (Scarlet on steroids); fort tour (we
have 4 or 5, each with a story); architectural tour (great to trace
Castine’s history through architecture of its houses/buildings); cemetery
tour (please do not laugh) - find 5-7 tombstones under which lie folks who lived a piece of our history😊😊; lighthouse

5. Involve MMA - “dock tour”? Bowdoin, Pentagoët, State of Maine, etc.

harbor” competition (for $1.50 you get a piece of construction paper and 5
colored pencils to draw the harbor - top 3 are hung in Emerson Hall for a month); some competition/ ride/ activity just for kids

Journal
Today began overcast and gray. There's supposedly a winter storm coming, though
the forecast keeps getting warmer and heavier on rain than snow. I have a CMT
meeting tomorrow morning. I'm not sure we'll be able to hold it given the
weather.

Appreciation for veterans of conflict. Indeed, not all wars are just. Can there
be a just war? Are there veterans of things besides combat wars? What about the
war for civil rights? Did we not fight for that?
It's easy to be dismissive of the armed forces, or for the way they are
currently deployed. The state of the world is complicated, and it's tempting
sometimes to assume that if everyone just minded their business, we wouldn't
have war. The reality is more nuanced.
Sometimes it's easier to live in a dictatorship. If they're effective, it's less
messy and more gets done. But in a free society, with confusion, chaos, things
not getting done, lies the opportunity.

Emma's in a shit mood today too. I'm not sure why. There's the fact that it's
Veteran's Day and I don't have the day off work, so she's on kids. There's the
missing Boy's Life magazines which I think I threw away while tidying in the
dining room, but I honestly can't remember. Then there's just the fact that she
actually doesn't like hanging out with kids around the house. One of those
things is pretty minor, but the first two are character flaws of mine. One is
that I don't take time off for family time when I should. The other is that I
often throw things away or clean up without checking with Emma. So it's probably
a confluence of events that's led to her being in a shit mood.
In any case, it's very hard not to go down with the ship. Emma is a strong
personality, and when she's having an off day, everyone feels it. It's funny,
because that's not true for everyone. When Jess has an off day, things kinda
plug along. I'm not sure about me, because I'm stuck in my own head. But I think
I do a pretty good job insulating the world from the whims of my mood. Maybe I
don't and I'm just unable to see it.
Today, my goal is to get the things done on my todo list, and avoid falling into
Emma's negative vortex. A big part of that is going to be doing things she asks
that seem nonsensical, like sorting through all the recycling looking for those
magazines. I'm perfectly happy going with Si to Boy Scouts tomorrow and
explaining that I think the magazines got thrown away from being in the wrong
pile in our house. But Emma will consider it a mark on her honor that something
she was entrusted with was lost on her watch. Nevermind that we destroy and lose
things all the time that make us look bad. Our entire house is a hole into which
things get lost or destroyed.
To that end, I've been doing my best to simplifying the accretions of shit in
the corners and to keep them clean. I will screw up from time to time, but I'd
rather we had a system for not losing things that took some pain to implement,
rather than no system at all and not knowing when we were going to fail to find
or keep something.
