It seems I've made a step function improvement in how I use org mode. For a long time I railed against the "timestamps not scheduling" mantra. But now I see how meetings or events should be timestamped, and org then does a good job of scheduling things for you. The SCHEDULED property is much more of a fine-grained trick that I don't think works very well for me at all.

The thought, I think, is to use scheduling to determine when you'll start on a task. I don't generally work like that and my days are usually pretty straight forward.

Another day, another morning get up before six and going for a run. Discipline the night before seems to have a lot to do with how I am able to get up in the morning.

I realize that makes a lot of sense, but sometimes it's not until you've said things out loud that they become clear. For a long time I thought I could still have some time in the evening to do things and then go to bed by 11 or midnight. That's just not true. I have to be working towards bed by 10 or it just doesn't work.

On my run this morning I found myself listening to Waking Up with Sam Harris again. I took some time off from the podcast after a series where he got stuck on a rant about how people misconstrue him in public and end up making him look bad. I appreciate he was trying to talk about how no one is allowed to disagree politely anymore, but the whole conversation smacked of image curation more than anything else.

Today, however, he was talking about the insidious effects of social media. The effects are not just hard to parse or see, they are almost impossible, thus the use of the word insidious.

Interestingly, at one point even his guest mentioned that he was in Southern California and so not part of a "targeted group" on social media with regards to state actors manipulating voter sentiment or consumption patterns. That seemed funny coming from someone talking about how it's hard to even see these things happening.

Myroslav took me on a tour of testing the Workday integration. He was using cloud30 on staging with a test company. With the right sFTP credentials, it's just a matter of dropping a file in the S3 bucket via sFTP and checking to see if it imports.

Thankfully it did work, but now Myroslav wants to test the actual file from AppDirect which seems to have some fields named different things.

Talking with Myroslav this morning this looked like a really easy fix. Even more, the fix was a more robust solution the bug I was working on before.

I need to discover how to change a person's department in BambooHR. The scenario we are trying to reproduce is:

1. Assign person to two groups in BHR (is this possible?)

2. Perform BHR sync

3. Check that person is assigned to a department

4. Change their department in BHR

5. Verify that they have had their department changed
