A [[https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-best-damn-receiver-who-wont-make-the-hall-of-fame/][fascinating article]] on FiveThirtyEight today about the plight of Jimmy Smith, a wide receive for the Jaguars that likely wont make the HOF despite statistically being one of the most successful WRs of all time. Jumping from their case for why he was great, to his path through the NFL presents an striking story of adversity and success. As a rookie, he was ignored when complaining of abdominal pain until he took a hit to the gut and ended up needing emergency surgery.

I think Smith would make a really great case for how recognition is not assured when you achieve greatness. He also had a drug problem later in life that led to prison time. That's crazy.
