Started the day working on sourdough doughnuts. I was kind of a dick to Emma

when I ended up having to live up to my agreement ot make gluten free dounts as

well. Emma said she wanted to make them for Jess and I said not to worry, that I

would take care of that too. The reality was not as much fun. It was still nice

that we got them done, and Emma even discovered a nice shortcut by not bothering

to make them holy, but rather just cut them in strips and make them donut

sticks.

In the end, though, the sourdough doughnuts were a delight. The puffed up

beautifully and, fried in lard, were amazingly flavorful. The ease with which I

made them actually got me excited to try making a business out of making actual

dough-nuts. The origin of the word, I learned, (and Emma had guessed before I

learned) came from Dutch New Amsterdam and was likely a take off on "nuts of

dough", which I love. I fried these up as giant doughnut holes, and they were

spectacular.

Now I'm trying to hold in pee while hanging out with a sleeping baby, as Emma

and Jess clean up around the property. Jess even gave the kids jobs of running

around picking up sticks and such. What a good idea.
