- Note taken on
I feel terrible right now. I got all setup to go running this afternoon and
just didn’t have it in me. I thought maybe I could do some good garden work
instead and went out there and just felt tired. I cleaned up some paths,
helped Emma put up some of the tomato trellises, cultivated between some of
brassica rows and watered a bunch of stuff. It was sort of productive, I
guess, but I just have a malaise about me right now.
I am also getting frustrated with how Emma’s approached dinner lately. Dinner
ends up being great, but I feel like she doesn’t really start thinking about
it till seven or eight and then we eat really late. I think the trick here is
to volunteer to make dinner more often, but she usually has a plan and when it
dosen’t involve a recipe but just sort of throwing things together, I feel helpless.

Had an interesting conversation with Emma Sweet this morning about Ishmael and
how all Judeo-Christian derived culture suffers from an [[id:ff35f144-7309-47b2-99ec-742533603e9e][Us Versus Them
Complex]]. Emma pointed out how bullshit those ideas about us struggling with

Had a nice time spending about 30 minutes cut up burdock and cleaning up the
rows for tomatoes. Later today Emma’s going to setup posts with the kids, then
we can put up the trellises and plant later today.

Put the goats in the same place as yesterday as the pasture still seemed
in pretty good shape. They’re hanging out down the slope in the backyard.

Little things mess up sleep or eating schedules, negative impact.
- A form of taking care yourself and allow yourself to have a bad day.
- As an engineer, no one tells you “oh you’ll get ’em next time”
- You still take the risk to press merge
- Psychological safety
- Jason pushed some code out that changed the way they use an exernal API,
racked up $30K of charges in geolocation calls
- It happens, simple mistake, cache keys weren’t lining up
- Beating myself about about bugs in People Attributes, but happily fixing
bugs in Group Types
- Any bugs you solve before a feature goes live, is a success
- 10 nit picks in a PR, doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea
- Have to let the conversation in your head go
- Could reach out to specific people to see if it’s a good idea
- There will be times when a solution you’ve found is not shared
- *Try not to take anything personally*
- It’s an idea, it’s not you
- *Come up with several ideas and ask for input*
- The editor mindset of going back and verifying that something achieved what
you wanted it to achieve
- Every good engineer has to have the battle, doing something that wont be
productive or has problems, asking you to power through it
Agenda
- Career vision as principal v. manager?
- Getting stuck where I am comfortable

The plan
1. Spin up a new server (Rackspace, or any other provider is fine)
2. Move as much of the current configuration over to the new server
3. Verify everything is working as expected
4. Cut over the DNS configuration for the four (?) domains to the new
server
5. Wait a day to make sure everything is good
6. Create a machine image of the old server and turn it off
